Virginia, Music, Snow, and Hide & Seek

Virginia: Elena and I took a trip to Virginia two weeks ago because she hadn't seen my family since before Christmas. I love that my mom is able to drive down and visit about once a month, but my dad and sister can't come visit as often since the poor things have jobs. :)
My parents have pictures just like this of us kids playing the piano when we were about her age.
When we were in Virginia, we went to the aquarium. Elena liked people-watching just as much as she liked seeing the animals and fish. I guess my mom took most of the pictures while we were visiting because I only have two aquarium pics. Here she is with my dad watching the otters and some little boy.
Music: Elisa, one of the Young Women in the branch was in All County Orchestra, so Elena and I went to go see her (Dan had a church meeting). The music was great! I really enjoyed the performance. Elena did too, but she enjoyed it by standing on my lap and pointing and saying, "Oooo" and clapping repeatedly, so we ended up listening to the second half from the hallway. I think that next year I'll go again (without Elena) and this time Dan and I can make it a free date. :)
Snow: It snowed (big fat Utah-sized flakes) the night before Valentine's Day here. It was beautiful. We actually got 2 inches! We went out to play in the morning before it melted and she loved eating it. This is the only picture that I got without her hand in her mouth. The one below is her eating the snow off of her pants when we came inside. The video is more of the same, but if you listen closely you can hear her suck on her mittens.



Hide & Seek: She started hiding like this yesterday. I thought it was so cute. Then today she did the same thing only she "hid" behind a postcard.

Elena's Favorite Things

Elena's #1 favorite thing is her dad. I love the way that she looks at him. She is in love! She literally cries for him sometimes when he leaves the room even if she and I are playing. They have so much fun together. I love this picture. I took it last week. They both look so happy.Elena's #2 favorite thing is her pig. She always sleeps clutching her "teddy pig", and each time she wakes up, I go in and see her holding and talking to it. Because she so attached, she is only allowed to play with her pig when she is getting ready for bed. Other than that it stays in the crib where it "sleeps" during the day. Well, Elena loves her pig so much that I had my mom buy an extra so that I could wash one while she used the other. Earlier tonight she discovered where I had the spare hidden and she was so excited. She made a happy noise and I looked up and saw her hugging them both with a big smile on her face. Adorable! I happened to have the camera in her room, so I was able to take a picture - although of course she stopped smiling right before.
#3 is books/reading. This girl loves to read. She has started to request certain books or stories by barking for her book about dogs or patting her head and saying, "bump" to request the book where the monkeys fall of the bed and bump their heads. She loves being read to, but she also really likes flipping through the pages by herself.
and #4 is her Cabbage Patch baby doll. She loves to give hugs to her baby and say, "Awww." In this picture she is sitting in the box for her new car seat and patting her baby's belly. That's about it for the list. Oh wait! I forgot to include me. Elena likes me too. I don't think that I should be in fifth place, but I'm also not tied with Dan, so let's just say that Mom is number one and a half. :)

In no particular order...

I have been so busy for the past couple of weeks that I haven't had time to post some random pictures and videos that we have taken:

1. My friend Kristin and I went to the BYU game when they played Wake Forest. It seemed like half of our ward was there. It was their first time playing each other in almost 40 years and it was a lot of fun. I was surprised at how many BYU fans I saw. Unfortunately, the Cougars didn't do very well. :(
2. This is kind of gross, but I thought it was so adorable. Elena got into the tub of Desitin while I was unpacking from our trip. I looked over and saw this:
3. My mom thought it was time for Elena to eat her first ice cream cone and I agreed. Elena definitely enjoyed it. (Her face would be messier, but it had just been wiped.)


4. My sister-in-law Amy made this awesome sign for Elena's door while we were in Utah. She is so talented and crafty. I love it!
5. The following video was taken earlier tonight. Elena is showing off her newfound knowledge of animal sounds. It might be hard to hear because she was too interested in all her new toys to sit for the camera, but she does a pretty good job if I do say so myself. :)

Happy Birthday, Elena!

Our sweet girl turned one on the 17th! She is such a happy and lovable kid and we are so blessed to be her parents. It is funny how she has really started to seem older and more independent since her birthday. She has always been talkative, but now she knows so many real words. She says: book, banana, hi, bye-bye, ball, mom, dad, baby, etc. She can also tell you what sounds a monkey and a dog make as well as where her tummy, ears, hair, eyes, etc are. She is getting more adventurous too. Although she takes steps each day (2-4 before she falls), she isn't walking yet. She sure doesn't let that slow her down though. Sometimes she crawls so fast that she trips herself up, and she loves to cruise around furniture/people and crawl over and around things. She is so much fun to have around. :)

My mom came to visit on Wednesday and we have had a great time (my Dad had work and a conference in Maryland). She was so excited to be here for the big day. On her birthday Elena opened some presents in the morning and we went to the Children's Museum between her two naps. Her favorite parts of the museum were the hollowed-out treehouse with baby dolls and the Krispy Kreme make-believe factory.

Amazingly enough we woke up to snow on the 17th. The last time that it snowed here was on January 18th last year (I woke up to see snow the morning after Elena was born). This past weeks snowfall was our biggest storm in a couple of years. Seriously, they canceled school the night before in preparation. The house looked like this:

Saturday the 19th was the day of Elena's little party. We invited her friends that she knows well from play dates. I was so happy that everyone was able to come. We had a great time and it was nice to let her enjoy spending time with so many of her favorite people all at once. Here are a couple of pictures from the party. These first two pictures were taken at the end of the party when we tried to get all of the kids onto the carpet so that I could have one picture with all of the children in it. It almost worked. :)

Christmas in Utah

This post doesn't include any pictures of our first Christmas at home (with my parents and Bethany) before we left for Utah. I downloaded those onto the computer right before Dan gave me a new one for Christmas. Yea! I haven't transferred them to my fabulous new computer yet. Maybe I can post them later this week. Here are some photos and videos of our adventures in Utah along with rambling narration.

This is a picture of all the "Dison" women (minus Dan's mom). Sure there are other females in the family, but we are the only ones with the Dison last name: Emily, Ally, Amy, Elena, Emma, and Kylie. :)
Sweet Elena's first impulse when she got her hands on some snow was to eat it. Her love of putting cold things in her mouth didn't stop here. During the flight home, she was chowing down on all of the ice in our drinks. It made me so nervous, but I had Dan on one side of me and coincidentally a pediatrician on the other. She was great on the flight back - she didn't have her own seat, so she stayed awake until 10:30pm Utah time, but she was very good. She enjoyed playing with the pediatrician's teacup chihuahua (that was under his seat) and even the flight attendants helped out by holding her and giving her cups and headphones to play with. The perks of being adorable...
This was when I realized how different my daughter and I are. She loved being out in the cold. She would smile so big whenever the cold wind blew in her face. (Notice Jesse's socks on her hands, I had left her mittens at Dan's parents' house.)
Before we played the traditional Martinez family game of 31 (with cards), we decided to include the kids in a game of Skittles. It was hilarious. You roll the dice and eat what you roll. If you get doubles, you are allowed to chew (and swallow if you have enough time) until it's your turn to roll again. It was really hard! My favorite part of this picture is how Emily (on the left) is unable to contain her Skittle juice. Also in the pic is: Zac, me, Kylie, Dan, Ally, and Amy.
Dan took his nephew Zac snowboarding at the park down the street from their house. There is a nice little hill just perfect for a beginner.
We really enjoyed our visit with the Colliers. Chad and Christie have cute twin boys: Keegan and Kevin. It was great to spend time with them. We were also happy to spend time with our friends Jack, Bernice, Kathy, and Tracy and get to see Jeremy, Alexandria and Adam while we were in Utah.
Jesse loved holding Elena. He would rub her arms (like in this picture) and say, "I'm helping to keep her calm." So cute!
Elena LOVES her Uncle Lloyd. They had a lot of fun together and he fed her lots of sweets behind my back. :) She would kick with joy when she saw him.

The family with the Salt Lake Temple in the background. It was so cold that night, but we had a great time and the lights were beautiful. I am amazed by the work that goes into decorating all those trees!

Elena became very familiar with tissues after being sick most of the time between Thanksgiving until Christmas.


We went bowling at BYU with Ally and Kylie and Elena liked it too. She bowled 3 times and actually got 2 spares. Maybe I should have let her bowl for me. We went bumper bowling and I still failed to get over 100!

Happy New Year!

Much to the chagrin of my mom, I have not updated the blog since Dan and I arrived in Utah. We have been blessed to spend 2 weeks here with his parents and his brother's family. We also got to see friends from BYU and my brother Adam and Dan's nephew Jeremy (and his girlfriend, Alexandria) when we picked them up at the airport yesterday and dropped them off in Provo.

It has been a lot of fun and Elena has definitely been spoiled by the attention. She "demands" a besito from each person in the room before she says goodbye or goodnight. Dan and I have really enjoyed seeing her interact with her cousins, aunt, uncle, and abuelos.

When we first arrived it was snowing off and on and freezing for about a week and a half, so it was fun to be able to enjoy the snow since there will probably be very little of it this winter at home. We have seen the Christmas lights at Temple Square, played Wii and Rock Band with the kids, eaten a lot of good food, watched a lot of movies, and I have even done a bit of crafting with Amy (sis-in-law). We didn't have time to do everything/visit everyone we wanted, but overall I think the vacation has been a perfect combination of relaxing and running around. I hope that you were all able to enjoy time with friends and family this Christmas!

We are reluctant to return home, but at least on the way back, Elena will not be sick. On the 5 hour plane ride here she had a high fever and would not eat or drink anything (including her medicine). It was so pitiful - she slept most of the way. Her ear infections are gone now and we are much less nervous about taking her on the plane this time around. I will post within the next couple of days and include some pictures and video including: playing in the snow, Elena's first time bowling, and having fun with cousins.

Busy Saturday

We had a busy day on Saturday. We were first invited to Katie's graduation from "Scola domi Turvavillae" (I hope wrote that correctly) which is the name that they so cleverly came up with for their home school. It was a toga party due to the name of the school being in Latin. We had a great time talking with good friends and celebrating Katie's hard work. She starts at BYU in just a couple of weeks!!! I can't believe I didn't get a picture with her in it.

That same day we went to our old ward's (congregation's) Christmas party at the stake center. I say "old ward" because we now attend church with the Spanish branch.
I asked Dan to take a picture of Tikiya and I holding Elena and Jaylen because he is so dang cute. Check out his corduroy blazer - very dapper! I can't believe that he is 2 months younger than Elena - he is a big boy. :) We were all happy to get to visit with so many friends. We love our ward family. The food and the company were great. We unfortunately had to leave before the children in Primary acted out the Nativity, but I heard that it was adorable.
Next we drove to another LDS church building nearby where we attended the Spanish branch's Christmas party. They had a skit about the Tres Reyes Magos (3 Kings) and then Santa came out! Elena is in this picture with her friend Caitlin - who by the way loves to sing and dance to Fergie songs. So funny! I was thrilled to get a picture of Elena with Santa at the party because pictures with our mall Santa are a $20 minimum. I'm sure that would have been a better quality photo, but this works too.
After Santa we got to watch 3 pinatas get destroyed. 1 for the kids, 1 for the youth (12-18) and one for the grown-ups. I took my turn and then it was time to go. Poor Elena went to bed 3 hours late, but we had a really great day.
This video doesn't show any of us, but I thought that the pinata song was interesting. They would sing for each person and then when the song was over, his/her turn hitting the pinata would be over.


**We are so blessed with wonderful friends and family. I love this time of year because we are able to really reflect on all of our blessings. I'm so grateful for the birth of the Savior and for his life and ministry. I am inspired by his example and gospel. Merry Christmas everyone!**

Weather, Hairdos, and Crawling

Spring is here! Well not really, but it sure has felt like it this week. We have been very lucky to have the temperature above 70 everyday since Monday. Elena has been feeling well, so we were able to go to playgroup at the park on Tuesday. She enjoyed playing on the swings and we were both happy to see some of our friends from Second Ward.


I can't believe that she finally has enough hair to pull it up like this. This was not the first time I had tried- just the first time that it has worked. I'm so used to seeing it down that I'm not sure how much I like it, but it was definitely cute enough to warrant a picture. I took it down after about 20 minutes when it was nap time.
Brag time: I went over to my friend Summer's house and she taught me how to make bows. I made this one (brown with pink argyle) and a purple one. Hopefully Summer's craftiness will continue to wear off on me because I can take all the help I can get. Now that Elena's hair is getting thicker, I'll have an excuse to make more. I know it doesn't show perfectly in the picture, but you can just ask Kaye - she's seen it and had to listen to me toot my own horn twice already. :)
The big news for this week is that Elena has started to crawl. Genuine crawling on all fours. :) As you can see in the video she still reverts back to the army crawl sometimes, but it is amazing to see her move around like such a big girl. I wasn't sure whether it would ever happen or not. She has been strictly a scooter for about 4 months.

Right now I am watching "It's a Wonderful Life" on TV. It just started which is great because the flashbacks are my favorite. I love the 12 year old George Bailey. Watching this movie is one of my Christmas traditions. I hope you all have a great weekend -- Christmas is only 11 days away!!!
